The Simpson Center provides financial and administrative support for crossdisciplinary research, teaching, and engagement projects in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
The Simpson Center for the Humanities will begin accepting proposals for its Spring Funding Round on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Applications are due Friday, April 5, 2024.
The Simpson Center provides financial and administrative support for crossdisciplinary research, teaching, and engagement projects in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. We support a wide range of activities, including fellowships, cross-departmental research groups, scholarly conferences and symposia, community-engaged collaborations, and other projects.
We have two annual funding rounds, in the fall and spring; we occasionally also open special funding rounds mid-year. The funding terms for all selected proposals in a given year will fall within the timeline of the subsequent fiscal year, which runs from July 1-June 30 annually. Proposed projects should be led by UW faculty and/or graduate students, require $1,000 or more in funding, and be planned for the subsequent academic year (with the exception of projects to be undertaken through our summer fellowship programs).
In the Spring Funding Round, we will accept proposals in the following categories:
- Faculty-Led Collaborative Projects
- Colloquia and Conferences
- Crossdisciplinary Research Clusters
- Large-Scale Collaborations
- Research Method Exploration Awards
- Faculty Summer Reading Groups
- Graduate Research Clusters
We are also eager for new, unconventional projects that don’t fit neatly into one of our formal categories but that align with the Simpson Center’s mission. Please contact Associate Director Rachel Arteaga to discuss.

- Complete the proposal information form. You will be prompted to upload your proposal at the end of the form.
- If your proposal requires a letter of support, request that the letter be sent separately by your recommender to the Simpson Center at schadmin@uw.edu.
