Vanishing Points: Law, Violence, and Exception in the Global War Prison

Derek Gregory has written more than a dozen books, including The Colonial Present: Afghanistan, Palestine, and Iraq, (Blackwell, 2004), in which he evaluates the geopolitics of actions taken by the United Kingdom, the United States, and Israel within those countries. He has been interested in what he calls “the geographies of bombing, and what the places and spaces used for war say about cultural and political forces on society, analyzing how the remaining traces of colonial practice continue to shape that part of the world.

In 2006, the Royal Geographical Society awarded him their Founder’s Medal. He is a fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Canada. He has also been named an Honorary Fellow of King’s College London. In his role as professor, he teaches courses on human geography and geographical history topics such as urbanization. In Geographical Imaginations, he interweaves social theory and notions of space and place. He also runs a blog, geographical imaginations, in which he continues his examination of modern war and geography.
