Relational Memory Studies

This cluster explores the application of relational, interdisciplinary methodologies to the study of cultural memory and its contestation at the nexus of nationalism, colonialism, and historical catastrophes. For the 2024-2025 academic year, our programming centers issues of relational memory in and around Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, with an eye to these regions’ multiple entanglements. Longer-term goals of the cluster include the expansion of cluster programming to other historical and geographical foci; the formation of a UW working group in relational memory studies to promote research and curricular development; and the development of collaborative relationships with other institutions’ initiatives in memory studies.
